German based sportswear company Adidas is spearheading the ecological effort among similar companies so far. In 2016, they have stopped using plastic bags entirely, in their stores, and are continuing to implement this effort in their production process.

“We also continue to improve our environmental performance during the manufacturing,” said Gil Steyaert, who is responsible for global operations. “This includes the use of sustainable materials, the reduction of CO2 emissions and waste prevention.

“In 2018 alone, we saved more than 40 tons of plastic waste in our offices, retail stores, warehouses and distribution centers worldwide and replaced it with more sustainable solutions.”

In addition to this, Adidas has partnered with Parley for the Oceans, an ecological initiative that started producing Eco-friendly footwear, made from plastic trash and debris, gathered on beaches across the world, some intercepted before getting into the ocean, some washing ashore, back in 2015. As Adidas has been doing similar things for the last couple of years, they have teamed up and introduced the Adidas x Parley collection, that produces shoes in a similar way.

In 2018, this collection was met with great enthusiasm from the fan and populace, and the 5 million pairs were sold out quickly. In 2019, Adidas plans to sell an additional 11 million pairs of these shoes. The plastic waste is converted into yarn, which is used to create the material of which the upper layers of the shoes are made. Different versions of running, hiking and sport shoes we’re made, as well as shirt, pants and jacket, all made with yarn produced by recycling the plastic debris. In partnership with the Spanish football giant, Real Madrid, which they sponsor, Adidas has also introduced the worlds’ first football jerseys, made from the same recycled materials.

In addition to this, Adidas has made a commitment to implement usage of solely recycled polyester in each and every product they make, by 2024. In addition to this, they are a founding member of the Better Cotton Initiative, using also sustainable produced cotton, which shows how above and beyond they go to achieve sustainable, humane and ecologically friendly business. Following this, they agreed to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, signing the Climate Protection Charter for the Fashion Industry at the UN Climate Change Conference in Katowice, Poland.
