Makarska is a stunning Croatian city located on the Adriatic coastline. The town is located just 60 kilometers southeast of Split and 140 kilometers northwest of Dubrovnik. Makarska is an important regional tourism center. It is situated on a horseshoe-shaped bay and lies between the Adriatic Sea and the Biokovo Mountains. The city is especially famous for its golden sandy beaches, palm-fringed promenade, and the many bars and boutiques that overlook the harbor. Close to the beach, there are many large capacity hotels and camping grounds that are quite popular with both tourists and locals.

The town has a rich history associated with it. In the 15th century, the ottomans conquered the Balkan region. The Makarska coastal area was conquered by the Turks in 1499. It was under Ottoman rule that the port town of Makarska underwent significant development.

One of the biggest draws to Makarska is the legend of pirates attached to the city. The Makarska Riviera was a pirate heaven, with a coast full of hidden bays, coves, caves, and beaches that were only accessible by ships. In fact, the pirates of Makarska Riviera, referred to as Narentines, were the most dangerous sailors of the Adriatic Sea at one point in time. Today, tourists from all over come to visit the safe harbors at Makarska, Beroullia (Brela), Labinica (Gradac), and Ostrog (Zarostrog).

The biggest draw of Makarska is the Biokovo Mountain. This mighty mountain dominates every facet of the town and beckons tourists to explore it. The mountain stretches for nearly 100 kilometers, and it is a place full of history and natural beauty. There is a nature park in the part of the mountain just above Makarska. The highest peak of the mountain is also just above Makarska. To visit the Biokovo Mountains, you can either hike or drive up. There are many hiking routes that begin from Makarska and some other places nearby. One of the best routes to take is the one that starts from Makarska and leads to the Vosac Peak, which is another prominent peak.

Of course, one of the biggest tourist attractions in Makarska is the Makarska Riviera and the beautiful Adriatic Sea. The Makarska Riviera is the stretch of coast that starts at Vruja and ends in Gradac. This area is famous for its stunning golden beaches, and exploring this part of the Adriatic coastline should be a priority on your list.

Driving on the coastal road of the Makarska Riviera is a marvelous experience. During your drive, don't forget to make a stop at the famous Nugal Beach.
