Postira is a little Mediterranean town situated on the northern side of the Brac Island in Croatia. Sometimes also referred to as a village, Postira is a picturesque old town that is just eight kilometers away from Supetar, the largest town on Brac Island.
Postira is famous for its olive fields, pine forests, and miles and miles of vineyards. The town is known for its fertile soil that has made it home to numerous vineyards and olive fields, making Postira one of the foremost producers of olive oil and wine. In fact, the name Postira itself is derived from the word 'Pastura,' which means pasture' in Latin. There is also an abundance of tangerine fields located to the south of the city as well. Postira also has exceptional canning facilities for sardines in mackerels, and Postira sardines are much in demand throughout Europe.
The history of this town goes back to the early Romans, and you can still see the remnants of the past in the remains of a basilica in Lovrecina. The best time to visit this picturesque old town is in January when the village is decorated beautifully to welcome the almond bloom. After the January carnival ends, the town witnesses the cold northern bora winds, which signals the vineyards and fig plantations to start putting out buds. Natural beauty is in abundance in Postira, with the majestic mountains and crystal clear waters surrounding the village.
One of the unique sights to see in Postira is the Lazaric Palace. Located on the sea front, the palace is set amongst the stone residences of the many greats of Postira. The Lazaric Palace is characterized by its Renaissance style of architecture, especially its pinion. There are also many humanistic inscriptions related to religious matters all over the palace. This palace was once the home of the famous Croatian poet Vladimir Nazor, who was born in 1876.
The Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, constructed sometime in the middle of the 16th century, the Mirje locality, where the early Christian convent was discovered along with a cloister dedicated to St. Stjepan, the remains of a former Roman complex with ancient dock remains still in the sea, and the remains of an early Christian aisled church, are some of the many other sites that you must-see when in Postira.
Postira is also rich in many sandy and pebble beaches and coves. The most renowned are the beautiful coves of Lovrecin (which is a sandy beach), Mala Lozna (which is a pebble beach), Prvlja (a sandy beach), Rat (pebble beach), and Zastivanje (another pebble beach).
For tourists who are sports enthusiasts and want to have an adventurous vacation, there are many activities to take part in, including cycling, beach volleyball, football, handball, basketball, tennis, bowling, swimming, diving, snorkeling, and walking. There are many other water sports being offered at the beaches of Postira.
