Vis

The beauty and charisma of Croatia remain unmatched. With a growing number of tourists heading to Croatia every summer, it is indeed becoming harder to find a more beautiful place to enjoy a rejuvenating holiday than this stunning European country. If you want to spend your vacation amidst untouched nature and some of the most spectacular beaches on the Adriatic Sea, the perfect destination will be the Vis Island in Croatia. You might better recognize Vis as the mesmerizing location where the iconic movie Mamma Mia 2 was filmed.

Located off the Dalmatian Coast, Vis is a remote rocky island that is often touted to be one of the most mysterious places in Croatia. The Vis Island is the most distant inhabited island from the mainland, located beyond the towns of Brac and Hvar. In fact, it won't be wrong to say that the city is the halfway point between Italy and Croatia. But yes, it is a bit challenging to reach Vis. However, its inaccessibility has further added to its exclusiveness and mysteriousness.

Vis is made up of 90 square kilometers of untouched and stunning golden sandy beaches, bays, and two cities where life has been going on at a slower pace since the town was used as a British or Allied base during World War II. There is also a legend that says Vis was supposedly used as a hideout of Partisan or resistance leader Josip Broz Tito. The Vist Island has always had an important military past, and many British Royal Navy and RAF soldiers were stationed here during World War II.

One of the biggest reasons to visit this beautiful island is to have an off-the-beaten-track holiday. If you want to try something different, then the untouched island of Vis is the place to be. It is interesting to know that this island produces some of the most exclusive Croatian wines, including Vigava and Plavac. The highlights on the island are to visit the two larger towns of Komiza and Vis Town. The smaller nearby island of Bisevo is also a must-see to check out its famous Blue Cave or Modra Spilja.

Vis' coast is dotted with many beautiful beaches, bays, and caves. If you stay in the downtown area, you will be within walking distance of the Vis Harbor, helping you make the most of your time. If you are confused about where to start your trip from, a visit to the legendary Stiniva Beach should be your starting point. This stunning beach was awarded as the top beach in Europe in 2016, and it is known as being the prettiest beach in Croatia. While the beach is smaller than others, it is the unique setting that makes it a must-visit. The Stiniva Beach is located in a narrow bay and surrounded by steep 35 meter high majestic cliffs.

You should also take some time to climb Mt. Hum, the highest mountain on the Vis Island, located 587 meters above sea level. The climb will be well worth the effort as you get to take in some of the most glorious views of the entire island spread out in front of you. You can also enjoy a bird's eye view of the Komiza town, and there is a beautiful chapel, Church of the Holy Spirit, located on top of the mountain.
